LUTHERAN HIGH NORTHEAST DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS
THU 1/26/12
Today’s Bible passage is a summary of St. Paul’s words in Romans chapters 12 & 13—words that call God’s people to deny themselves and love others as themselves: “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world . . . Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought . . . Hate what is evil
. . . Never lack in zeal . . . Be joyful . . . patient . . . faithful . . . Practice hospitality . . . Do not curse . . . Do not be conceited . . . Do not be overcome with evil . . . Submit to the governing authorities . . . Pay taxes
. . . Do not commit adultery; murder; steal; covet . . . Put aside the deeds of darkness . . . Behave decently . . . [do not engage in] orgies; drunkenness; sexual immorality; debauchery; dissension; jealousy.” Today’s list: When you reflect back on this list, you may have one or all of these reactions. First, no one is going to tell me what to do! Second, I’ve never done any of these things, so I must be pretty righteousness. Third, it’s hopeless. There is no way to avoid the things on this list. I’m doomed. This is how people typically react to the law. They rebel against it, become self-righteous, or give up in hopelessness. Jesus offers the way to live a life that goes against all of these and many other evils. He lived a perfect life—avoiding all these sins because you and I could never do it. He allowed himself to be put to death on a cross—because God’s punishment for sin is death and hell. He rose from the dead on the third day—because He overcame sin, death, and Satan. For most of you, you were clothed with the Lord Jesus Christ when you were baptized. You received Jesus because of God’s grace—His undeserved love—and now His great love frees us to live for Him as we seek to live for others. Today’s prayer: We praise You, O Christ, for You could have abandoned us in our sin and left us to died eternally. Instead, You saved us, and so we pray that You would empower us to love our neighbors as ourselves, not because we have to but because we strive to in joyful response to Your grace. Amen.
